The coronavirus pandemic has virtually upended the way we live, work, and interact with one another. As the country slowly reopens, a new normal is emerging — one that requires social distancing and wearing face masks as ways to protect ourselves from contracting the disease. Indeed, the new normal comes with a new level of stress.
Face masks to protect during the corona pandemic have two functions: 1) they act as a barrier to incoming germs, such as infected droplets from the coughs or sneezes of others, and 2) they also shield others against your own possible germs. They may also provide a third function in providing a physical barrier to stop you from touching your nose and mouth if you have traces on your hands picked up from other surfaces.
The most popular facemasks for non-healthcare workers are surgical masks — most often blue with white borders. They fit loosely across your nose and mouth and shield against the large droplets that come from a sick person’s cough or sneeze. But note that facemasks won’t totally block the coronavirus; it’s an added layer of protection for you and the people around you when you use it along with regular hand washing and social distancing measures — like staying 6 feet away from others.
You can also make your own cloth facemask using the following guidelines:
- You can sew the fabric, tie it around your face, or fold it around some hair ties for ear loops.
- Use at least two layers of material.
- Add a copper or wire ribbon on the nose of the mask to help it fit better.
